In an Illinois congressional district where just six percent of the constituency is Indian American, the incumbent Democrat Congressman is being challenged by another Indian American.

On October 23, 1983, a suicide bomber drives a truck laden with explosives into the U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241. A similar attack on a French barracks killed 58 French soldiers the same day. Then President Ronald Reagan vowed to keep the U.S.-led peace keeping mission in Lebanon, but withdrew U.S. forces months after the attack.    

Typhus, a bacterial infection that is sometimes life threatening, is on the rise in Los Angeles and several other U.S. cities. Public health officials say homelessness is making the problem worse and that the disease, which is associated with poverty and poor sanitation, is making a comeback in the United States.

VIDEO: Carpentry is traditionally considered a man’s job in Pakistan, but a few brave women are changing that mindset, from carving unique wooden utensils to building an entire house. VOA spoke to several women who wanted to hammer home the point that not only are women integral to their community and the economy, they can also build things as well as men.

The U.S. Senate has recently passed two bills sanctioning the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Once signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, the sanctions will target foreign nationals and companies that provide financial, material or technological support to Hezbollah and its affiliates in the region.

VIDEO: Zimbabwe’s economic crisis has resulted in an acute shortage of essential prescription drugs. Officials say the shortage has pushed some people to turn to the black market for medicines — and authorities are worried those drugs do more harm than good.
