On October 18, 1867, the United States takes possession of Alaska after buying it from Russia for $7.2 million. Alaska, which spans over 1.7 million square kilometers, is the biggest U.S. State, roughly double the size of the next biggest state, Texas. It is the third least populated state with just over 700,000 residents in the 2015 census. Alaska became a state in 1959. |
