In West Africa, as in other parts of the continent, dancing is an important part of traditions. An ocean away, in Baltimore, Maryland, a multi-generational family has made performing those dances part of their tradition.

On This Day in American History
On October 17, 1989, San Francisco is rocked by the biggest earthquake since 1906. The quake came moments before game three of baseball’s World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics, held at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.  Millions of Americans saw it on live television. The quake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, killed 63, injured thousands and caused damage to more than 100,000 buildings.
VIDEO: The disappearance and alleged murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi inside a Saudi consulate building highlights the risks that journalists around the world face when doing their jobs. This week on Plugged In, VOA contributor Greta Van Susteren talks to Iranian-American journalist Jason Rezaian, who was imprisoned for 544 days in Iran.

You could say baseball has struck out as America’s favorite pastime, because Americans apparently would rather watch TV than head to the ballpark. Most Americans prefer to fill their spare time watching television than doing just about anything else, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

VIDEO: For 30 years, the Ocean Conservancy has conducted an ocean cleanup campaign on the world’s beaches. They’ve collected over 136 million kilograms of garbage, a lot of it plastic. But some entrepreneurs are working to reduce the amount of plastic filling up oceans and landfills.

VIDEO: As urbanization sweeps across Africa, more and more energetic, ambitious African women are entering the energy sector. But they face many challenges: discrimination, misogyny and a lack of female role models and colleagues. The U.S.-funded programs Power Africa and Young African Leaders Initiative have brought 37 women to Johannesburg this month to teach them more about making it in this harsh environment.
