VIDEO: Blind Paralympic cyclist Shawn Cheshire, 43, recently faced her biggest challenge — a rim-to-rim hike through the Grand Canyon. Cheshire crossed 68 kilometers of steep and uneven terrain, hiking through the night and finishing in 24 hours and 15 minutes — believed to be a record by a blind hiker.

On This Day in American History
On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown leads a raid on the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (still Virginia at the time). Brown hoped the raid would spark a revolt and lead to the end of slavery.  The raid was repelled by U.S. Marines and other militia members, and Brown was later tried, found guilty and hanged for his actions. However, the event exacerbated tensions between pro- and anti-slavery states and many historians believe the raid helped put the United States on the fast track to civil war.

Both parties, however, seem to agree on one thing: President Donald Trump will be the key issue in elections that will determine control of Congress for the next two years.

VIDEO: The press that serves the U.S. immigrant population typically shows little interest in midterm elections. But the outcome of this year’s fight for control of Congress could either blunt much of President Donald Trump’s agenda or advance his policies. That’s why the immigrant community may be more interested in this year’s midterms than ever before.

Hauntworld.com estimates there are more than 4,000 Halloween “fee-based” attractions in the U.S., with the overall industry generating more than $1 billion. VOA takes us on a behind-the-scenes tour of a popular haunted forest in Maryland, where people pay for a night of fright.

In recent weeks, more than $30 billion in projects have been scrapped and other loans and investments are under review.
