On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown leads a raid on the federal armory in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia (still Virginia at the time). Brown hoped the raid would spark a revolt and lead to the end of slavery. The raid was repelled by U.S. Marines and other militia members, and Brown was later tried, found guilty and hanged for his actions. However, the event exacerbated tensions between pro- and anti-slavery states and many historians believe the raid helped put the United States on the fast track to civil war. |
