On October 10, 1845, the Naval School, which was officially named the United States Naval Academy in 1850, opens in Annapolis, Maryland. The first class consisted of 50 midshipmen and seven professors. Courses included mathematics, chemistry, English, French, philosophy, navigation and naval gunnery. When it became the Naval Academy, new midshipmen were required to study for four years as well as train on U.S. Navy ships during the summer, a practice that remains today. |
