VIDEO: With the digital era in full swing, sketchbooks are likely to be gathering dust in desk drawers around the world. But for the founder of the Brooklyn Art Library, sketchbooks are precious, the nondigital predecessors of Instagram. On This Day in American History
On October 5, 1947, President Harry Truman gives the first presidential speech ever to be broadcast on television. The thrust of the speech was to urge Americans to reduce their consumption of grains so that the United States could help starving Europeans struggling to rebuild after World War II. Truman was reportedly worried that if the U.S. didn’t provide food to Europeans, the Marshall Plan would unravel. He urged Americans to not eat meat on Tuesdays and to avoid egg and poultry on Thursdays. He also urged Americans to try to save a slice of bread each day.

The United States renewed its call to win the war on terrorism Thursday, unveiling a new counterterrorism strategy that promises to confront a complex and expanding threat by taking whatever steps are deemed necessary.

As concerns mount over the security of Afghanistan’s upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for Oct. 20, Afghan officials are downplaying the threats and saying that the country’s security forces are capable to securing thousands of polling stations across the country.

The U.S. Senate narrowly voted Friday to limit debate on the nomination of President Donald Trump’s embattled Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh, advancing his nomination to a final confirmation vote that could come as early as Saturday.

The Voice of America announced Thursday it has fired or proposed to terminate more than half the members of its Hausa language service following an investigation that found the individuals had accepted improper payments from a foreign official in West Africa.
