On Oct. 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock fired into a crowd at a country western concert from his hotel room on the 32rd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. He killed 58. More than 800 were injured in the gunfire and the frenzy to flee.

On This Day in American History
On October 1, 1890, the United States Congress creates Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The park is famous for its “Half Dome” and sequoia trees. The park was created after John Muir, the so-called “Father of National Parks,” campaigned for action. The park now welcomes over 4 million visitors every year.

South Korea is considering abolishing the fund Tokyo paid into as part of the landmark 2015 agreement to resolve a lingering dispute over Japan’s wartime sexual slavery of women. The government said it will deliver its decision on the matter soon and what it plans to do with the roughly $9 million in it.

VIDEO: Some animals, like mantis shrimp and chameleons, can see more shades and colors than humans. But a few people also have this ability. Those who do have a condition called tetrachromacy. Concetta Antico, an artist from San Diego, is one of them. Genia Dulot spoke with her about what it’s like to live with vision that allows her to see millions of shades of color.

U.S. President Donald Trump says a new trade agreement between the United States, Canada and Mexico is the “biggest trade deal” in U.S. history. He says it will protect U.S. workers.
