VIDEO: A man who was homeless for 18 years started a successful nonprofit to give other homeless and people with substance abuse problems a pathway to a job in the world of high tech.

On September 18, 1793, George Washington lays the cornerstone to the United States Capitol building. The legislative branch had met in eight different cities prior to the building of the Capitol in Washington, DC. It took four years for the building to be finished. Today, the legislative branch is housed in six different buildings clustered around the Capitol    

The U.S. Air Force will next month introduce a new, more advanced aerial fuel tanker, the KC-46 Pegasus, that may some day be able to defend itself with a laser. Tankers re-fuel U.S. fighters and bombers in flight, allowing them to stay aloft longer and fly much farther. That important role makes tankers a key target for adversaries.

In Baltimore, a free after school music program called OrchKids is being used as an instrument of change for children in underprivileged neighborhoods. In the past 10 years, more than 1,300 children have received free group music lessons, and free instruments, from flutes to trumpets to violins.

Africa has the globe’s fastest-growing youth population as well as 10 of the poorest countries, a volatile combination that warrants making it “the world’s most important priority for the foreseeable future.” The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation lays out that argument in its second annual report on progress toward sustainable development goals set by the United Nations for 2030.

After losing his mother to war, 10-year-old Hikmatullah decided to join a peace movement, members of which have been walking hundreds of kilometers to different regions of Afghanistan since June with the message of peace and an end to violence.
