On This Day in American History
On August 24, 1814, British troops arrive in Washington, D.C., and burn the White House during the War of 1812. The attack on Washington was in retaliation for an American attack on York, Canada, in June of 1812. When the British troops arrived, President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, had already left. Before setting the building alight, the troops reportedly feasted on leftover food. The British also burned the U.S. Capitol building and other notable Washington structures.
