Current intelligence and security officials have warned repeatedly that not only was Russia responsible for meddling in the 2016 election, but that more attacks — both in the form of hacks and in the form of more subtle information operations — are coming.

On July 11, 1976 the seventh anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic moon landing, the Viking I lander becomes the first spacecraft to land on Mars.  Launched the previous August, Viking 1’s journey to the red planet took nearly a year. The probe sends back the first close-up images of the Martian surface.

Fake news is a problem in Pakistan, where a human rights activist running for a provincial assembly seat in the July 25 elections, says he has been harassed repeatedly over his religious beliefs regarding the minority Ahmadiyya sect.

Days ahead of talks hosted by the U.S. State Department to advance religious freedom around the world, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sat down with VOA’s Nike Ching to discuss pressing issues, including the plight of Myanmar’s Rohingya, the repression of Uighurs Muslims and Tibetan Buddhists in China, and Russia’s activities in eastern Ukraine.

Vian and Zhyan are sisters from the town of al-Shaddadi, Syria. Both were forced to marry Islamic State militants after the terrorist group took control in 2015. When their town was liberated, they joined the Women’s Protection Units fighting the IS militants.

As Tibetan exiles in India mark the 60th year since Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama fled his homeland, they are facing a stalemate in their six-decade-long struggle for more autonomy for Tibet. Some told VOA’s Anjana Pasricha that as they look at the road ahead for their cause, their concerns include the health of the aging spiritual leader.

VOA talked to attendees dressed as heroes and hamburgers at San Diego’s annual Comic Con, where convention goers celebrate popular culture and the entertainment industry.
