US farmers like Brian Duncan are beginning to feel the effects of tariffs imposed by China in retaliation for US tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. The Polo, Illinois, farmer grows soybeans and corn while also raising pigs. Duncan says he’s losing money on virtually everything growing on his farm because of imposed or impending tariffs.

On This Day in American History
On July 13, 1923, the iconic Hollywood sign is dedicated in Los Angeles, California. Originally an advertisement for a local real estate development, the landmark becomes a permanent fixture in the Hollywood hills. The sign originally reads ‘Hollywoodland,’ but the four last letters will be dropped almost three decades later after a 1949 renovation.

Lourdes de León stares at her 6-year-old son’s toys. They are a reminder that Leo Giancarlo is far away. De Leon surrendered her son in mid-May to US customs and border protection officials after being caught in Arizona, where she had hoped to seek asylum. In early June she was deported back to her native Guatemala but says that her child remains in New York.
