The United States has a history of detaining unaccompanied minors. Back in 1907, when a 12-year-old boy traveled to the US from Poland, looking for his mother in New York City, he was put into detention. There aren’t many studies about unaccompanied minor children, but the language used to describe today’s immigration situation is similar to what’s been used in the past.

The US military has housed migrant children before, most recently during the Obama administration. The Trump administration has asked the military to help shelter thousands of undocumented migrants, including unaccompanied children who illegally crossed the US southern border. Today, more than 11,000 migrant children are in custody at about 100 standard shelters in 14 states.

China is bracing for the 25 percent tariffs the United States will impose Friday on $34 billion worth of Chinese imports. China is threatening to retaliate with tariffs of its own, but Chinese economists warn of tough times ahead if trade frictions with the US continue. While being urged to ‘prepare well for protracted conflicts,’ Chinese media are told not to attack US President Trump’s ‘vulgarity.’

VIDEO: A migrant mother was briefly reunited with her three children after losing custody of them when she illegally crossed into the United States. Yeni Gonzalez recently spent a day with her children at the New York facility where they are being held. She doesn’t know how long her children will be held there. The Trump administration says it is working to reunite more than 2,000 separated children from their parents, but exactly how they plan to do that is not clear. For Gonzalez, a permanent reunion with her children could still be months away.

Retrieving the remains of American servicemen fallen in battle has for decades been the central mission of a specialized unit in Hawaii. Although efforts to recover soldiers from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other conflicts are ongoing, no US recovery team has visited North Korea since May 2005. However, after last month’s Singapore Summit, it appears likely US teams will once more be permitted to visit the reclusive nation.
