On This Day in American History
On June 5, 1893, the trial of Lizzie Borden begins in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The 33-year-old is accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an ax in a sensational trial that draws nationwide attention. A jury eventually acquits Bordon of the crime and she and her sister inherit a considerable estate. (Photo: Lizzie Borden pictured in 1890.)

VIDEO: A Muslim US Marine veteran is leading an effort to bring 29 of his fellow US veterans into the homes of Muslim families across the United States during the 29 days of Ramadan. The guests spend the night with their host families and also break fast together at sundown. The experience is designed to educate, entertain, and, hopefully, unify Americans from different walks of life.

A big draw for community colleges is that they usually cost less than most other schools. That’s a factor that can also attract international students. And when they arrive, they also find something they hadn’t necessarily expected — a support network outside of class as they form deep bonds with their host families.

VIDEO: American artist Phil Hansen has never met Bana al-Abed, yet the Syrian girl from rebel-held Aleppo is a major source of inspiration for him. The little girl documented the siege of her city on Twitter and her story drew Hansen’s interest. Now the two strangers are bound by Hansen’s art.
