The post-millennial generation just might be defined by the Florida teenagers who’ve become vocal gun control activists after surviving a deadly shooting at their school. The generation of young people born since the late 1990s — and sometimes referred to as Gen Z, iGen or #Gen — might not have a catchy moniker like the millennials who came before them, but they are making a name for themselves. Here’s how the Parkland students embody the post-millennial generation.

On This Day in American History
On May 31, 1879, Gilmore’s Garden in New York City is renamed Madison Square Garden by William Henry Vanderbilt, and opens to the public. The venue, located at 26th Street and Madison Avenue, is used for sporting events such as indoor track and field meets, boxing and the National Horse Show. Today, the fourth iteration of the Garden hosts professional basketball and ice hockey, as well as boxing, concerts, ice shows, circuses, wrestling and other forms of sports and entertainment. The threat of a trade war was resurrected this week with the White House announcement that it will press ahead with tariffs on $50 billion in Chinese imports and other measures. Some see the announcement as a flip-flop on an agreement reached earlier this month to move away from trade tariff threats and focus on a broader deal.

VOA EXCLUSIVE: Pakistan says it is reassessing strained ties with the United States. Next door in neighboring Afghanistan, American troops are fighting insurgents to stabilize the war-ravaged country with the help of NATO allies. But in a VOA interview, Foreign Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan says Pakistan might decide to halt US supply lines into Afghanistan.

The Navajos were forced to walk from their land in what is now Arizona to eastern New Mexico 150 years ago. The US Army decided relocation was the best way to deal with conflict between white settlers and Native Americans. The collective trauma of that experience has been passed down through the generations.
