President Trump’s decision to impose tariffs — 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminum – comes at a cost to farmers and their suppliers. Higher prices for farm equipment and concerns about competitive access to a big market like China, has depressed prices for corn and soybeans, creating the perfect economic storm for farmers.

On This Day in American History
On May 25, 1925, Tennessee educator John Scopes is indicted for teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution to his class. In what comes to be known as the Scopes Monkey Trial, the teacher is found guilty and fined $100. Scopes initially becomes involved in the case after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announces it will challenge the constitutionality of the state law prohibiting the teaching of evolution — if a Tennessee teacher would be willing to act as the defendant. A dozen detained undocumented immigrants in orange prison overalls sit at a long table inside a Pennsylvania detention center listening to a presentation in Spanish about their legal options. They learn what their rights are and what to expect in immigration court. The orientation program is indirectly funded by the US Justice Department, but might not be for much longer.

From camel driver to law student, Ramesh Jaipal’s life has taken him on an unlikely journey. He was five years old when his parents sold him to a camel business — and into a life of servitude — in Dubai. Along the way, Jaipal, now 34, was also a rickshaw driver, motor mechanic’s assistant, newspaper vendor, shoe polisher and car washer. Yet he still managed to work his way up the education ladder. The most recent leg of his worldwide journey landed him in law school, thanks to a fellowship administered by the US Department of State.

There’ve been more than two dozen MS-13-linked deaths across Long Island, New York in the past two years. President Trump visited Wednesday, his second gang-related event in Long Island since taking office. But as disturbing and alarming as the gang’s gruesome murder methods are, residents have mixed feelings about the recent national focus on their community.

Children on water slides isn’t something you’d expect to see in the middle of a drought. In Cape Town, South Africa, city officials are threatening to turn off the taps due to prolonged, severe drought. But that doesn’t seem to be a concern at Water World in Cape Town where children splash around in pools of fresh water.
