VIDEO: The living is loose and the drugs flowing in Slab City, California, where people move to live off the grid. The outpost in the Sonoran Desert is home to artists, retirees, hippies, the poor, snowbirds and anarchists. There’s no electricity or running water, but anyone can fence off an area and call it home in the city residents say is the last free place to live in America.

On This Day in American History
On May 24, 1883, New York’s Brooklyn Bridge opens to traffic, connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn for the first time. At that time, the Brooklyn Bridge is the largest suspension bridge ever built. More than two dozen people died building the span, including John Roebling, the bridge’s designer. VOA CONNECT: Consignment shops give new life to old clothes. Often, customers are also suppliers. They bring their belongings in to be sold and share the profits with the shop. They also buy new-to-them clothing at the consignment store, with the added benefit of keeping waste out of the landfill.

VIDEO: Buffalo, New York — part of the so-called American Rust Belt — has seen better days. One-third of residents in the once-prosperous city live in poverty. It’s a national phenomenon. Buffalo is one of many American cities in the northeastern and midwestern US that has fallen on hard times due to the decline of a once-powerful industrial sector.

Britain’s newly married royal couple has a special kinship with Africa. Prince Harry spent his post-graduation year in Lesotho and launched a children’s charity there. Millions of royal watchers across Africa watched raptly as he married American Meghan Markle this past weekend and observers say that love for Africa shone through.
