VIDEO: President Trump continues to escalate attacks on the Russia probe that has cast a shadow over his presidency for more than a year. Some Republicans are demanding the Justice Department release more information about its sources and methods. The campaign on the part of the president and his allies to discredit the investigation has both legal and political implications.

On This Day in American History
On May 23, 1911, the New York Public Library is dedicated. With nearly 53 million items and 92 locations, the NYPL is the second largest public library in the United States, behind the Library of Congress, and is fourth largest public library in the world. The NYPL is celebrated in US popular culture, appearing multiple times as a setting and topic in television and film.

People struggling to get by can walk into a Virginia mosque and pick up a box of food. That’s exactly what Malika Abumarek of Morocco did when we visited. She says the food donated by Islamic Relief USA will make a big difference for her family of five. A number of the people taking food home are refugees from Syria and Iraq, as well as Latin American neighbors. Although the boxes are distributed for Ramadan, the food is given to needy families of all faiths.

Marvel’s latest superhero is an indigenous teenaged girl. Amka Aliyak, alias Snowguard, is an Inuit with the power to shapeshift, that is, change into animal form. While there are mythical elements to Amka’s story, she’s also a typical modern Inuit teenager, who is struggling to find her place between traditional and modern cultures.

VIDEO: Washington, DC, was a city on fire 50 years ago following the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The nation’s capital was one of more than 100 US cities wracked by civil unrest following King’s murder, but historians say the tension had been building for years.
