On This Day in American History
On April 27, 1865, the steamboat Sultana exploded near Memphis, Tennessee, killing 1,192 people.  It was the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history.  Most of the casualties were Union soldiers who had been prisoners of war during the recently concluded American Civil War.  The Sultana was designed to carry fewer than 400 passengers, but there were over 2,000 aboard when the tragedy occurred.

For some people, makeup isn’t just about the latest shade of lipstick or eye shadow. It’s about empowerment. Just ask the fans at Beautycon, a recent two-day event in New York that showcased more than 100 makeup and beauty brands.

Authorities estimate some 130 gangs operate in the South African province that includes the city of Cape Town. The gangs support themselves through weapons smuggling, contract killing, drug and human trafficking, prostitution and more, recruiting children as young as 9 into the trade.

Built on the site of an slave warehouse, this Alabama museum is filled with visual exhibits that serve as a catalyst for understanding what many blacks in the United States have historically endured.

The migrant caravan that angered President Trump has reached the US/Mexico border. To help those planning to seek asylum, another caravan has been heading south to the border to meet them: A group of American lawyers and human rights activists.

Analysts and body language experts are noting the contrast in his warm embrace of French President Emmanuel Macron and frostier past encounters with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

On April 26, 1954, polio vaccine trials begin at an elementary school in McLean, Virginia. About 1.8 million children in the United States, Canada and Finland participate in the trials and, the following year, researchers declare the vaccine safe and effective. The Salk polio vaccine becomes a standard childhood immunization in America, eventually almost completely wiping out the highly contagious disease in the Western Hemisphere.

From modest beginnings — $5,000 allotted by President John Adams to launch the collection — to tens of millions of items today, the Library of Congress even boasts a couple of ghosts.

From the Russia investigation to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to the scrutiny law enforcement is focusing on his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, the president faces mounting legal challenges. The increased scrutiny of Trump’s long relationship with Cohen could become a serious problem for the president.

VIDEO: An American German-Catholic woman who converted to Islam decided to design modest clothes after she couldn’t find what she was looking for in stores. Macy’s, the nationwide department store, is now carrying Lisa Vogl’s designs on its website. In an interview with VOA, Vogl dismisses critics who say her fashion line condones the repression of women.

A caravan of Central American migrants crossing north toward the United States has arrived on the US-Mexico border, where fear of persecution at home has led many of them to apply for asylum in the US. Others, who are not optimistic about their chances of entering the US, have decided to stop short of their American dream.
