France is giving prisoners keys to their own cells in an effort to discourage inmates from committing more crimes once they serve their time. Rules include spending 25 hours weekly working or participating in educational or health-related activities. Prisoners also take shifts cleaning up communal spaces — activities designed to help them envision a life on the outside that doesn’t include delinquency and crime.
