Don’t tip police officers. A Congolese refugee family is learning how to adjust to life in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. From learning that bribing public officials is wrong, to acclimating to the cold weather, and being instructed on how to take the bus to work, family members of all ages settle in their new home in their new country, as the reality of having left Africa forever settles in.

On April 3, 1860, the Pony Express, which delivers mail via horse and rider relay teams, makes its debut. A westbound rider and mail packet travel Missouri to California, completing the 1800-mile journey in 10 days. The journey sets a new standard to speedy mail delivery and captures America’s imagination, but the Pony Express ultimately turns out to be unprofitable and short-lived, ending operations after 19 months in business. Did China pressure an American company to fire a US worker in the United States? That worker — a 49-year-old Omaha, Nebraska, resident — was earning $14 an hour dealing with customers on social media for Marriott, the international hotelier. He ended up losing his job after a tweet-related international incident that demonstrates the challenges Western companies face when they do business with China.

Some US states and cities are starting funds to defend illegal immigrants even as the US government works to detain and deport them. About 13 jurisdictions have joined a network to expand legal representation for undocumented immigrants — opening up a new front in the conflict over immigration.

One-in-4 Americans is online pretty much all of the time. Those numbers drop dramatically for Americans who access the internet with their computers rather than a mobile device, according to a recent study, while people with smartphones are online more frequently. Here are the groups of people in the United States who are using the internet the most.

A new scissors-like tool developed by California scientists could be used to snip out the parts of a plant’s DNA that attract pests and disease.
