On April 3, 1860, the Pony Express, which delivers mail via horse and rider relay teams, makes its debut. A westbound rider and mail packet travel Missouri to California, completing the 1800-mile journey in 10 days. The journey sets a new standard to speedy mail delivery and captures America’s imagination, but the Pony Express ultimately turns out to be unprofitable and short-lived, ending operations after 19 months in business.
