Catholics in Hong Kong are confused and upset with recent steps by the Vatican to resume relations with the Chinese government even as Beijing continues to silence critics. In the nearly seven decades since its establishment, China’s Communist government hasn’t had formal relations with the Holy See. China’s Catholics are allowed to practice their religion under a government-supervised Catholic entity in which the government — and not the Vatican — officially names bishops. Critics argue any agreement will legitimize government-appointed bishops and force those in the underground church to retire.
