Irish-American Mary Evans believes newer undocumented immigrant groups are less entitled to live in the United States than older immigrant groups like the Irish. While deportations were down overall in 2017, they’re up for many countries, including Ireland. That’s got some people in Boston’s Irish community, who are unused to this level of scrutiny, on edge. Most Americans presume you’re all set, says one undocumented Irishman, ‘just because you’re white and you speak English.’

On February 23, 1886, Charles Martin Hall, assisted by his older sister, Julia Brainerd Hall, produces the first samples of man-made aluminum. Because of Hall’s inexpensive process of producing aluminum, it becomes the first metal to be used on a large scale since the prehistoric discovery of iron.

Firm but fair is how French President Emmanuel Macron refers to immigration legislation he’s proposing. A sudden increase in the number of elephants being slaughtered for their skin in Myanmar has alarmed conservationists. Elephants have a rich and proud history in Myanmar, having been used for transportation, agriculture, construction and warfare, while also being viewed as a symbol of power and prestige. But their survival is under threat, with only about 2,000 wild elephants left in Myanmar today.
