Every summer Cambodian adoptees and their adoptive families from across the United States gather at a Colorado camp. Born in Cambodia, raised in America and shaped by both cultures because of their adoptive parents’ determination to educate them about their Khmer heritage, these adoptees call themselves ‘Khmerican.’ For many, the camp is the only time they meet someone like them. But the US-Cambodia adoption program was suspended in 2001, so there are no more families with camp-aged children, which leaves now grown-up former campers feeling the loss. |
