On December 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carrie Nation smashes up a barroom in Wichita, Kansas. The crusader believes alcohol is the cause of many evils in American society. She ends up in jail, but is released a short time later. Nation goes on to become famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons as part of her anti-alcohol crusade. Her campaign contributes to the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment which, for 13 years, prohibits the production, transport and sale of alcohol in the United States.
