On December 12, 1770, six of the eight British soldiers responsible for the Boston Massacre are acquitted of all charges. Two of the soldiers are found guilty of manslaughter, but are released after each is branded on his thumb as punishment. The soldiers had been posted to pre-revolutionary Boston to quell civil unrest and, on March 5, 1770, fired into a rioting mob, killing five men and injuring six others. |
