With an estimated unemployment rate as high as 85 percent, Zimbabwe doesn’t have enough jobs to go around for its college-educated young people, but the nation’s new president promises to improve the economy. On the streets of Harare, VOA speaks with people who are hopeful their leaders, who fought for the country’s liberation, will focus on the future, and not the glories of the past.

On November 27, 1978, San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk are murdered at City Hall by former Board of Supervisors member Dan White, who is said to be angry over the mayor’s decision not to reappoint him to the city board. After first shooting Moscone, the gunman then kills Milk, an admired San Francisco activist and one of the nation’s first openly gay politicians. (Photo: Milk, left, with Moscone, right, in 1977.)

Illicit drugs are dealt openly on the streets of the Tenderloin, a high-crime neighborhood in San Francisco where the sidewalks are lined with the homeless and other people in the throes of a mental health crisis. Then there’s the guy in glasses walking around playing his trumpet, which is actually a call for help.

After being pinned with a shady reputation, tattoos are finally getting some respect. The markings have different meanings in different cultures — from the spiritual to the religious, to being a sign of defiance, shame or honor. Now, with an exhibit of their own at a prestigious museum, tattoos are finally becoming widely recognized as art.

What is Temporary Protected Status? A country can be designated for TPS when conditions in the country temporarily prevent its citizens from returning safely. Foreign citizens who are protected by TPS can live and work legally in the US. For Haitians in the US, TPS runs out on July 22, 2019. VOA speaks with the Department of Homeland Security to find out what happens next.

A romantic scene between a Muslim king and legendary Hindu queen isn’t going over well with everyone in India. The Bollywood film was one of the year’s most anticipated movies, until fierce protests and violent threats by right-wing Hindu groups delayed its release.
