‘Unbelievable’ is what refugee Hassan Abduraheem calls his odyssey from a crowded prison cell in Sudan to a fixed-up house on a Virginia farm. The former pastor says he spread the gospel at home, but the Sudanese government threw him in jail after accusing him of espionage. Abduraheem’s life took a sharp turn thanks to a Facebook post and US congressman.

On This Day in American History
On November 24, 1947, Congress cites the ‘Hollywood Ten’ as ‘unfriendly witnesses’ after they refuse to answer questions about alleged Communist influence in the movie industry while appearing before the House Un-American Activities Committee. The group of directors, producers and screenwriters is sentenced to one year in jail. At the same time, 50 top Hollywood executives decide to blacklist the Hollywood Ten. Sex, lies and videotape? Estimates suggest Haitian TPS holders have 27,000 children who were born in the US. Now that the Trump administration is ending TPS for Haitians, what happens to people like Isma — and those thousands of new young Haitian Americans?

A decade after Nepal abolished the monarchy, the Himalayan nation votes in new elections to complete the country’s turbulent journey to democracy. The two-phase election is the first to be held under a new constitution that turned Nepal into a federal republic. Voters are choosing a new parliament and legislatures for newly carved-out states. In New Delhi, there is both optimism and skepticism after the political drift of the last 10 years virtually brought Nepal to a standstill.

America’s history of racial inequality is a prevalent theme in Hollywood this season. Director Kathryn Bigelow hopes her film, Detroit, stimulates greater conversation, while George Clooney, directing the dark satire Suburbicon, reminds people that racial tension in America is nothing new.
