The course of Zimbabwe’s history changed this week after longtime leader Robert Mugabe, a freedom fighter turned president-for-life, was ousted at age 93. What happens next depends on a complex web of connections that has the southern African nation poised to install its first new leader in almost four decades. Here’s a look at Zimbabwe’s key political players as the jockeying for power begins.

On This Day in American History
On November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, is assassinated while riding through Dallas, Texas, in an opened-topped vehicle. First lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who rarely accompanies her husband on political trips, is by his side when he is shot. Thirty minutes later, Kennedy, 46, is pronounced dead at a local hospital. Shortly afterward, Vice President Lyndon Johnson is sworn in as the nation’s 36th president with Mrs. Kennedy by his side.

As families began preparing for the holiday season this week, thousands of Haitians learned they could soon face deportation. The Trump administration has revoked the temporary protected status (TPS) that allows them to live and work in the US. The change comes almost eight years after a devastating earthquake killed more than 200,000 people on the island. In New York, home to one of the largest Haitian populations in the country, people are wondering what their next steps will be.

EXPLAINER: Most Americans will have the day off tomorrow to celebrate Thanksgiving, which was officially made a national holiday by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Here’s the scoop (of traditional stuffing?) on one of America’s favorite holidays.

VIDEO: Despite a push to promote the fashion industry in sub-Saharan Africa, designers face major financing challenges. A recent study found the fashion and textile industry could generate nearly a half-million jobs in the region over the next decade. The African Development Bank even launched its ‘Fashionomics’ initiative in 2015 to revitalize the industry. VOA speaks with designers in Kenya about the realities of struggling to grow their businesses.

The people of Lataband Tangiwere are beginning to think beyond survival and toward the future now that Islamic State is gone from their small Afghan village. VOA visits the area after the terror group was recently pushed out and learns that one of the first things a local police commander did was dig up the bodies of IS fighters to prove they are not martyrs.
