On November 20, 1923, the three-light traffic signal is patented by inventor Garrett Morgan, the son of two former slaves, who is a prosperous businessman and owner of a prominent black newspaper. At the time, the sudden switch between ‘Stop’ and ‘Go,’ with no lapse time in between, results in numerous crashes on the crowded narrow streets. Morgan’s invention — the forerunner of today’s yellow light — helps alleviate this problem. |
