On November 9, 1872, the Great Boston Fire breaks out in the city’s commercial district, resulting in one of the costliest fire-related property losses in American history. By the time the flames are extinguished one day later, 30 people are dead, almost 800 buildings are destroyed, 1,000 are homeless, 20,000 people are unemployed and there is $73.5 million in damage. |
