Boko Haram has driven millions of Nigerians from their homes, many of whom have suffered violence and trauma. VOA traveled to Nigeria to film a new documentary, ‘Boko Haram: Journey from Evil,’ which shows that despite being mired in conflict and nearly a decade of suffering, not all is lost in Nigeria.

On This Day in American History
On November 9, 1872, the Great Boston Fire breaks out in the city’s commercial district, resulting in one of the costliest fire-related property losses in American history. By the time the flames are extinguished one day later, 30 people are dead, almost 800 buildings are destroyed, 1,000 are homeless, 20,000 people are unemployed and there is $73.5 million in damage.

The world’s second-richest black person was among those arrested in what Saudi authorities are calling an anti-corruption sweep. A large portion of Ethiopia-born billionaire Sheikh Mohammed Hussein al-Amoudi’s portfolio — $3.4 billion in oil, gold mines, agriculture and cement — is invested in Ethiopia, and people are wondering what happens to those assets now.

Fighting human trafficking can be fun and games in Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh City, VOA watches charity workers use quiz games and ring tosses at a factory to warn industrial workers and young people who are often targeted by traffickers with dubious offers to work abroad. The same games are being played at factories across the country in an attempt to reach out to vulnerable populations before human traffickers get to them.

Mourners carry a casket through the tall grass along Uganda’s border with war-torn South Sudan. The war started in 2013 as a fight between South Sudan President Salva Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, and his former vice president Riek Machar, a Nuer, which split the country along ethnic lines. VOA walked along with those mourning Duku Evans, a man in his mid-30s, the latest civilian victim of South Sudan’s conflict, which has killed tens of thousands of people and shows no end in sight.

More than 330 million people visited America’s national parks in 2016, enjoying the spectacular scenery and natural wonders. But all of that traffic increases the need for road repairs, additional park staff and habitat restoration. So the National Park Service plans to more than double the cost of a day pass at the most popular parks. We asked visitors at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado if a hefty price hike would keep them away.
