On This Day in American History
On October 12, 1492, a sailor aboard the Pinta, one of three ships in the fleet of explorer Christopher Columbus, sighted what is today Watling Island in the Bahamas. Columbus believed he’d reached Asia after sailing East from Spain 10 weeks earlier. Despite the fact that Columbus wasn’t where he thought he was, he is popularly credited with discovering America. Three hundred years later, on Oct. 12, 1792, Columbus Day was first celebrated in the U.S. Now, Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October.
