Germany is determined to speed up the integration of migrants in the face of some anti-immigrant sentiment in the country. The influx of over a million asylum-seekers in 2015 is believed responsible for the rising popularity of the anti-immigrant, far right AfD party. In Berlin, VOA finds that both the government and fellow refugees are helping newcomers learn about Germany as they build new lives.

On September 28, 1787, Congress votes to send the Constitution of the United States to state legislatures for approval. The new document will replace America’s first constitution, known as the Articles of Confederation.  

Iraq is moving to punish the would-be breakaway state after Kurds voted overwhelmingly for independence in a recent referendum. Iraq vows to shut down its airspace and join Turkey in holding military exercises. The country’s prime minister says he will exercise federal authority in the Kurdistan region, and parliament is pushing to send troops to the Kurdish-held region of Kirkuk to take control of lucrative oil fields.

Malawi is on the road to recovery, its president tells VOA. The African nation remains one of the world’s poorest countries after struggling with years of drought, floods, poor crops and budget deficits. President Peter Mutharika says he’s working on reversing the situation by focusing on four key areas.

Ten million dollars will be awarded to the team that develops the best educational app for children who have never set foot in a classroom. The aim is to help the 263 million children worldwide that the UN says are not in school. One of the biggest challenges is keeping it simple.
