Bling is the thing in an ancient Cambodian wedding ritual that calls for the groom’s family to march to the bride’s house bearing the most expensive gifts they can afford. The problem is that in the age of YouTube and Facebook, when the wedding is between children of the ruling elite, and the country’s per capita annual income hovers around $1,100, blinged-out weddings risk damaging the party brand.

On This Day in American History
On September 5, 1836, Sam Houston is elected president of Texas, after the republic gains independence from Mexico. Nine years later, Houston will lead the effort to help Texas become a US state and will become one of the state’s first two senators and eventually the governor of Texas.

A gargantuan armored tactical vehicle armed with water cannons, ballistic projectile loopholes and a 24-foot reinforced retractable shield is Russia’s latest weapon against — crowds.  Recently unveiled in Moscow by the famed arms manufacturer, the Kalashnikov ‘Shield’ is designed to disperse crowds at unauthorized rallies.

All eyes are on the new CEO of Uber, who starts his new job today. Former Expedia executive Dara Khosrowshahi takes the helm of the nearly $70 billion ride-hailing company. His appointment is a point of pride for his fellow Iranian-Americans at a time when they’re increasingly worried about rising discrimination in the US.

Life is a gamble for US farmers. At least that’s how Illinois grower Ken Beck sees it. Beck says he’s lost money for the past few years and believes President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement didn’t help matters. When the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is renegotiated with Canada and Mexico, he hopes the government will do right by the nation’s farmers.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey is likely to dump a heavy dose of reality onto President Trump’s agenda. Disaster relief funding is likely to add hundreds of billions of dollars to the federal budget, potentially drowning Trump’s idea of using a government shutdown as leverage if Congress doesn’t allocate funds for his promised border wall.

When older homes are demolished to make way for new construction, things like doors, floors and windows usually get thrown away. That’s a lot of trash when you consider that more than a million housing units were constructed in 2016. Instead of throwing the discarded materials away, there’s a tax deduction in giving them away to a nonprofit that helps the community by taking to heart the old saying, ‘one person’s trash is another’s treasure.’

VIDEO: The family road trip is an American tradition that the nation’s immigrants have also embraced. They’re joining the 79 percent of US households that are taking to the open road in 2017 and sharing America’s wonders with loved ones. Whether they’re heading to Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon, these road trippers are doing it their way.
