Choosing voters: Texas is one of eight states with pending redistricting cases. The Lone Star state is also a leading example of the broader debate over gerrymandering — the manipulation of district boundaries based on political considerations, including racially discriminatory intent, rather than shifts in population. Here’s how the case could impact the upcoming 2018 midterm elections.

On This Day in American History
On September 1, 1864, the city of Atlanta falls to Union forces during the US Civil War. Union Army Gen. William T. Sherman shells civilians and cuts off supply lines to the critical Confederate hub. Confederate troops destroy the city’s munitions as they retreat. With the departure of the Confederate authorities, Atlanta Mayor John M. Calhoun assumes the responsibility of surrendering the city to Union forces.

Mosques in Houston have opened their doors to flooding victims. Much more is being exchanged than food, water and shelter. Working together during a time of need has taught Muslims and non-Muslims more about each other.

While many have reached out to help victims of Hurricane Harvey there are those with bad intent who are taking advantage of the situation. Houston police have arrested at least 14 armed robbers and looters while city officials imposed a curfew to deter crime, all of which worries people whose loved ones patrol the streets.

A free speech activist. That’s how the man who organized last month’s rally in Boston describes himself. But John Medlar’s event — which he billed as a free speech rally — drew huge crowds of noisy counter-demonstrators speaking out against white supremacists and neo-Nazis. That outcome was not at all what the 23-year-old college student had in mind.

The level of destruction in Old Mosul has been compared to World War II Dresden. Yet people with limited resources have stayed despite bomb-riddled neighborhoods and militants hiding out in tunnels under buildings and piles of rubble. And more families are returning because they have nowhere else to go.

Venezuela has tallied nearly 10,000 violent deaths nationwide so far this year, but some observers contend that grim figure is a serious undercount because Venezuela’s government does not include extrajudicial killings in its homicide totals.

Just in time for Labor Day… ‘Yes, we can’ was President Barack Obama’s catchphrase, but he didn’t come up with the slogan. That honor goes to another community organizer — a little known American labor activist named Dolores Huerta.
