Thousands of ethnic minority villagers facing eviction in Cambodia are also dealing with a fundamental change in their way of life. With a new dam coming and their province set to be flooded, the government has ordered them to abandon their homes. On This Day in American History
On August 29, 2005, the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States occurs when Hurricane Katrina slams into the Gulf Coast near New Orleans, Louisiana. Katrina causes record storm surges all along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, overwhelming the levees that protect New Orleans. Eighty percent of the city floods up to the rooftops of homes and small buildings.

Angola has elected its first new president in nearly four decades. Voters want President-elect Joao Lourenco to narrow the glaring gap between rich and poor. VOA went to Angola, which is Africa’s second largest oil producer, but finds that most Angolans still live in poverty.

The US military’s latest battle is to remain relevant in the digital age. That’s the point of the US Defense Intelligence Agency’s so-called Innovation Hub, or iHUB. US military officials say America’s adversaries have been modernizing, which is why the US is gearing up for the digital arms race.

Protecting Europe’s landmark sites from attack is a number one concern among governments scrambling to develop new security measures to make it more difficult for extremists to use cars, knives and other low-tech weapons to attack civilians in city centers and near landmark sites, monuments and tourist attractions. However, some local  authorities are reluctant to introduce ‘Israeli-style” security’ into their cities, so they’re turning to water and trees as their first line of defense.

Kenya is the latest African country to ban the use of polythene plastic bags. Violators of the ban face stiff fines and even jail time if found using, importing or manufacturing the bags. VOA was in Kenya when the ban took effect and although the ban was announced months ago, some Kenyans were taken by surprise, resulting in lost sales for smaller traders.
