In a Texas district that went for Hillary Clinton in the last presidential election, Rep. Will Hurd, an African-American representing a majority Latino district, faces a tough 2018 mid-term fight. The Republican’s district is on the US-Mexican border, where President Trump’s proposed border wall literally hits very close to home. The legislator hopes to win voters over with his technology-focused approach to securing the border with a ‘smart wall.’

On This Day in American History
On August 25, 1950, under the order of President Harry S. Truman, the US Army seizes control of America’s railroads ahead of an anticipated strike by railroad workers. Having just sent American troops into a war against North Korean communist forces, the US president wants to ensure the smooth functioning of the railroads, which much of the country’s defense infrastructure depends upon.

While white supremacists and ultra-nationalists might feel they have a friend in President Trump, US military commanders are making it clear there’s no place for extremists in the ranks. However, some criminal gangs and white nationalist groups encourage members to join the military because they want people with weapons and tactical experience.

Nuclear is fun? From scuba diving near a nuclear power plant to wearing a pendant filled with uranium, Kristin Zaitz isn’t afraid of nuclear energy. She even worked at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant in California during both of her pregnancies. With power plants closing and new construction being abandoned, Zaitz is joining other American mothers who are making the case for nuclear power.
