Once viewed as a ragtag of fringe groups, the ‘alt-right’ has been energized by the election of a US president many see as their ally. While these groups are often at odds with each other, they share a common ethno-nationalistic ideology, which holds that there is no place in American society for non-whites, and sees whites as victims who are increasingly dispossessed.

On This Day in American History
On August 21, 1959, Hawaii becomes the 50th state in the nation, after the Hawaiian people vote, by a wide majority, to join the union. President Dwight D. Eisenhower orders that the American flag to be revamped to add a new star, 50 in all, arranged in staggered rows.

The day one of her friends underwent female genital mutilation is one Purity Achieng will never forget. That friend was one of at least 200 million girls and women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) worldwide. So when Purity, a 17-year-old from Kenya, took part in a competition that invites girls to come up with tech solutions to local community problems, she and her team created an app, called i-Cut, for girls at risk of FGM.

How did a former stay-at-home mom end up working for a tech company that’s worth around $1 billion? Getting back into the job market is a challenge for parents, mostly women, who take time off to care for their children. But now the tech industry is tapping into this talent pool, taking a chance on seeing how the skills of former stay-at-home moms and dads translate into the tech world.
