On This Day in American History
On August 18, 1590, all inhabitants of the Roanoke Island colony, the first English settlement in the New World, are discovered to have vanished when the colony’s governor returns from a supply trip to find the settlement deserted. Although Adams County voted overwhelmingly for Mr. Trump, growers are growing increasingly worried about what will happen to the state’s ‘fruit belt’ if there’s no immigrant labor force left to work the fields.

Over 60 years, the little dive next to a city alley has attracted presidents, movie stars, tourists and regulars who’ve gobbled up Ben’s spicy sausages and savory chili. While other restaurants on the street have come and gone, Ben’s has endured for decades, through riots and drug wars, and is still cooking!

Raqqa residents who escape airstrikes and Islamic State snipers are falling victim to landmines planted by the extremist group. US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) say their battle to oust IS from its self-proclaimed capital has entered a fierce and grueling phase as IS fighters use suicide car bombs, snipers, drones and tunnels in a fight to the death.
