The more than 13,000 Confederate statues and other commemorative items around the United States are the result of organized efforts by some groups in the South that were determined to revise the history of the Civil War, according to historians. What became known as the ‘Lost Cause’ movement set out to divorce the Confederacy from slavery and make the war about states’ rights and self-government. The ‘Lost Cause’ myths formed and took root because the South refused to sit back and let the winners write history.

On This Day in American History
On August 17, 1915, Charles F. Kettering receives a US patent for the first electric ignition device for automobiles. The self-starter was initially introduced in the 1912 Cadillac, although Kettering didn’t receive the patent until three years later. Before electric ignitions, drivers used iron hand cranks to trigger the internal combustion process that powered vehicles.

Human rights groups are decrying a plan to deport about 40,000 Rohingya refugees from India, where they fled to escape persecution in their native Myanmar. New Delhi lawmakers have been tight lipped on the sensitive issue, not offering specifics on how and where it will deport the refugees.

Lebanon is trying to count every Palestinian in the country for the first time ever. Authorities say the census is a first step toward improving conditions for the more than 300,000 Palestinians in Lebanon, many of whom are descendants of people who came to Lebanon in 1948 after being driven from their land in what is now Israel. Among the Palestinians used to living in poverty on the fringes of Lebanese society, there are suspicions of a ‘hidden agenda’ behind the census.
