On August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley, ‘the king of rock and roll,’ dies at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 42. Doctors determine the pop icon died of a heart attack that was likely brought on by his addiction to prescription drugs. Elvis is buried at his Tennessee mansion, Graceland, which becomes a popular tourist attraction.

The latest UN sanctions could wreak havoc on North Korea’s economy, according to defector Ri Jong Ho, who once served at the highest levels government there. He says the losses could top the projected $1 billion, dealing a huge blow to Kim Jong Un’s ambition to advance North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

The US is one of the world’s top producers of nuclear power, which fuels nearly 20 percent of total US electrical output. But the US nuclear power industry is on the decline, thanks in part to fracking and the high cost of building reactors. President Trump is interested in revitalizing the industry and some energy experts think they know how US nuclear power can be saved.

Five years after South African police shot 34 striking miners dead in the worst show of brutality since apartheid, South Africans are looking back on the Marikana Massacre. The shootings of the unarmed strikers shocked the nation, but apparently not enough to change the conditions the miners were protesting.

VIDEO: Ukraine is out to quash any suggestion that it would help arm North Korea, strongly denying an allegation that a Ukrainian arms factory may have supplied engine technology used in North Korean missiles. VOA’s Ukrainian Service interviews the analyst who made the allegation, who says Russia also might have been the source.

There are 26,000 inmates in Cambodia’s 29 jails. That overcrowding has Cambodian officials eager to implement a plan that introduces community service to replace mandatory detention in order to reduce the burden on the prison system.
