| On August 11, 1973, hip hop music is born after making its debut at a birthday party in New York. Clive Campbell, aka DJ Kool Herc, becomes the founding father of hip hop when he pioneers the ‘break beat,’ which extends the short drum breaks in music that club crowds love. Campbell’s signature innovation sparks a grassroots musical revolution, but it will be six years before the term ‘hip hop’ enters the American vernacular. |
