| On August 9, 1974, Vice President Gerald R. Ford is sworn in as president after Richard M. Nixon ends his term as the 37th president of the United States at noon. Nixon becomes the first US president to resign, which he does due to the Watergate scandal. After taking the oath of office, President Ford speaks to the nation in a television address and says, “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.” |
