The view from Detroit. President Trump wants to dramatically reduce the number of low-skilled immigrants allowed into the United States. The RAISE Act would cut legal immigration by 50 percent as part of Trump’s campaign promise to put America first.The city of Detroit, which has a growing foreign-born population, is often used to represent the plight of unemployed American workers, so VOA traveled there to see what locals think of Trump’s new immigration plan.

On August 3, 1949, the NBA — National Basketball Association — takes the court. The rival Basketball Association of America (BAA) and National Basketball League (NBL) agree to merge after a fierce 3-year battle to win players and fans.

TIMELINE: President Trump’s desire to dramatically reduce the number of low-skilled immigrants is the latest in a series of immigration measures his administration has aggressively pursued since Mr. Trump took office. Nowhere else has the president had such success in following through on a signature campaign promise.

The Uyghur language is now banned in all schools in northwest China’s Xinjiang region. The move marks one of China’s strongest measures aimed at forcing the assimilation of ethnic Uyghurs, a mostly Muslim ethnic group. The new directive calls for all students to be taught in Mandarin Chinese. An Uyghur-American group accuses China of trying to ‘kill the Uyghur language at the cradle.’

During a visit to Tbilisi this week, Vice President Mike Pence reaffirmed Washington’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty, while also criticizing Russian aggression in the area. After Pence’s visit, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili sat down with VOA’s Georgian Service to talk about how the vice presidential visit came at an important time for his country.
