Parents of six Burundian teens who disappeared last week from Washington likely knew their kids would not come back to Burundi. Instructors of the Burundian robotic team say the parents do not seem concerned.The parents have not made any public statements about the students, who apparently ran away on July 18 while in the U.S. capital for an international robotics competition. Two of the students were reported Friday to have entered Canada, while the whereabouts of the other four are unclear.

On July 25, 1969, President Richard Nixon announced that henceforth the United States would expect its Asian allies to tend to their own military defense. The Nixon Doctrine, as the statement came to be known, indicated the president’s determination to “Vietnamize” the Vietnam War.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is under attack from the man who hired him, President Donald Trump.  For a second consecutive day, Trump used a Twitter post to criticize Sessions and suggest that Hillary Clinton, the Democratic candidate in last year’s presidential election, should be the one facing scrutiny. Is the attorney general  as ‘beleaguered’ as the president says he is?

 

North Korea has executed citizens for distributing outside media. It is one of the most isolated nations in the world, but outside information is creeping in. Despite the repressive ruling regime’s best efforts, international activists say technology and market forces will eventually overcome state censorship. In that sense, North Korea is very like another repressive country: Cuba.

 

The Chinese government is tightening its grip on the Internet, stepping up efforts to keep netizens off of unsupervised connections, including those made via virtual private networks (VPNs). VPNs are third-party services that help bypass the so-called Great Firewall installed by state censors to filter traffic between Chinese and overseas servers – and block banned websites, including VOA.

‘Calling out the entire people, all groups in society.’ Venezuelan legislator Simon Calzadilla announces a 48-hour strike. The work stoppage is aimed at pressuring President Nicolas Maduro to cancel Sunday’s election of a constituent assembly to rewrite the country’s constitution.
