VIDEO: ‘Nothing Burger’ is a phrase that’s being used a lot lately in American politics. Accuse someone of something, and he or she might deflect by saying it’s a ‘nothing burger,’ meaning the charges are baseless. The owner of a Washington hamburger joint has been serving up ‘Nothing Burgers’ for a long time, and doesn’t think it’s right to insult a perfectly good burger by dragging it into politics.

On This Day in American History
On July 19, 1867, Congress passes the third Reconstruction Act, giving supreme power  to five Union Army generals overseeing Reconstruction in the South after the Civil War. The generals can remove any official who they believe is blocking rather than expediting Reconstruction, including ratifying the Fourteenth Amendment, which gives citizenship rights and equal protection to former slaves. The effort is widely resented by Southerners who feel the North is again attempting to impose its will on the former Confederacy.

Beijing wants banks to stop financing overseas forays of Wang Jianlin’s Wanda Group, which owns an array of foreign assets, including a Hollywood studio and AMC Theaters. The move has many wondering whether Wang has fallen from grace, or if Beijing is intensifying its battle against capital flight.

Ilhan Omar made history in 2016 after becoming the first Somali-American to win state office in the United States. The 34-year-old Muslim-American woman and former refugee now serves in Minnesota’s House of Representatives. Omar tells VOA she finds the US to be a very welcoming place, despite rising xenophobia and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

For decades, Myanmar has romanticized and idealized Aung San, the father of the country’s de facto current leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. The nationalist leader was gunned down on July 19, 1947, along with several other people in an event that has come to be known as ‘Martyrs’ Day.’ Now, on the 70th anniversary of his death, people are beginning to re-examine the legacy of a man who is considered to be the father of modern-day Myanmar.
