On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opens in Anaheim, California. Dubbed ’160 acres of happiness,’ the theme park is built on former orange groves. In an interview with the Daily News shortly before ‘the happiest place on Earth’ opens, founder Walt Disney describes the new park as a fabulous playground, ‘Something of a fair, a city from the Arabian Nights, a metropolis of the future, a showpiece of magic and living facts, but above all, a place for people to find happiness and knowledge.’
