Nic Sakurai prefers the pronoun ‘them.’ The Washington, DC resident doesn’t identify as either male or female. Luckily for Nic, DC is the first — Oregon being the second — in the United States to issue gender neutral driver’s licenses and IDs. After the new policy went into effect June 27, Nic became the first American to receive a gender neutral ‘X’ license.

On This Day in American History
On July 12, 1984,  Geraldine Ferraro becomes the first woman to run for vice president on a major party ticket when Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale chooses her as his running mate. However, the Reagan-Bush ticket soundly beats Mondale and Ferraro in the 1984 election.

When hate signs targeting blacks, Muslims and other groups appeared in a neighborhood just outside Washington, the residents responded by outfitting their homes and businesses with anti-hate messages.

Is Charming China wearing thin? Beijing’s been dangling economic aid to win over countries in Southeast Asia that are skeptical about China’s disputed claims in the South China Sea. The charm offensive comes after an international court rejected Beijing’s maritime claims, which put it at odds with much of Southeast Asia.

But lately, they haven’t been able to catch anything at all after Boko Haram fighters infiltrated their ranks and all fishing activities were stopped. That ban was recently lifted, but there are changes.
