The summer of 1967 changed American culture forever. It was a time of anti-war protests, peace movements, love, drugs, hippies and rock and roll that became known as the ‘Summer of Love.’ Anyone who practices yoga, eats organic, worries about the environment, embraces feminism or challenges traditional gender roles, has been influenced by America’s Summer of Love.

On This Day in American History
On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt is the first woman ever executed by the US government. She is hanged after being convicted for her involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. Her boarding house is located a few blocks from Ford’s Theater, where the president was shot. It was at the Surratt house that a group of Confederate supporters, including assassin John Wilkes Booth, plotted to kill the president.

Back into the fray: As President Trump wraps up his European trip Saturday, he returns home to tackle a stalled domestic agenda that includes health care reform. Republicans are divided over a plan that could see more than 20 million Americans lose their health coverage. With health care reform bogged down in the Senate, will the president will be able to deliver on a key campaign promise?

Without power, even the best smartphone or laptop can be useless. That’s a reality in the developing world where access to internet is a challenge, especially for people who aren’t on the electrical grid. However, a number of firms are looking into innovative ways to bring affordable internet access to all in order to help bridge the digital divide.

Starving and crying out for water, families pour out of old Mosul in waves as Iraqi and coalition forces capture buildings one by one. The heat is unbearable and the stench of dead Islamic State fighters rotting in the rubble permeates everything. They are IS’s last victims in Mosul as the militants’ rule here collapses. Many of the people fleeing the city now are widely believed to be the families of IS militants, both living and dead.

An Indian prime minister’s first-ever visit to Israel this week signaled a change that’s been in the making for 25 years. The visit acknowledged a relationship that has grown largely behind closed doors and represents ‘a normalization of Israel within the Middle East,’ according to one analyst. The visit underlines that India, a long-time supporter of the Palestinian cause, is delinking the two relationships as India grows closer to the Jewish state.

Chinese scientists are defending high-tech exploration activities in the South China Sea, insisting it’s a legitimate bid to advance science rather than a ploy to bolster China’s sovereignty claims over the contested waterway. The scientists say they hope to gather data on the world’s deepest seas for possible use in tapping minerals. They acknowledge that the research could help protect China’s sovereignty claim, but insist that’s not the main goal.
