Where’s my father? Children are among the lost and stranded as the chaotic final battles in Mosul rip families apart. Just outside Mosul, VOA meets a boy who recently lost his leg and is separated from his family, while a man tells of how he lost track of his wife and daughter in a crowd as they all ran from snipers. With more than 12 overcrowded refugee camps surrounding Mosul and many of the displaced staying with friends, relatives or in rented housing, finding loved ones isn’t easy.

Down to the final few. Meanwhile, US officials say the battle for Mosul is in its final push with fewer than 1,000 Islamic State fighters still battling it out in three neighborhoods. And, as their level of desperation rises, they become more violent and dangerous to the civilians around them.

On This Day in American History
On June 5, 1933, the United States goes off the gold standard monetary system in which US currency is backed by gold. Congress also bans the right of creditors to demand payment in gold. The United States had been on a gold standard since 1879, but bank failures in the 1930s during the Great Depression scared many Americans into hoarding gold.

Muslim community members had previously warned British security services about two of the men who went on to commit London terror attacks in the past month. One of the assailants in Saturday’s attack was a recognized Islamic State follower who’d been reported to police in the past. In London, VOA examines whether Britain’s security services miss several opportunities to identify high-risk militants.

VIDEO: Armed police used to be a rare sight in London but that’s no longer the case after three terror attacks in three months. With Prime Minister Theresa May vowing to crack down on extremism, the city’s large Muslim communities worry about what that could mean for them.

Only about half of Americans who are eligible to vote actually went to the polls in November 2016, in an election that catapulted long-shot candidate Donald Trump to the presidency. Iowa native Dustin Andrews, 25, who works in a factory that makes blades for wind generators, tells us why he was one of those people who stayed home on election day.

A Syrian refugee is cooking up his future using memories — and recipes — from his past. After escaping his embattled homeland and taking refuge in Jordan, Majid brought his family to the United States. He’s now employed by an online restaurant that works with immigrant and refugee chefs who whip up traditional dishes from the lands they fled.

VIDEO: Silicon Valley, the hub of high-tech innovation, benefits from the H1B visa program, which lets the companies bring high-tech professionals from other countries to work for them in the US. But the Trump administration has vowed to re-examine the program. We checked in with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs about the potential impact of any changes to the program at the opening of VOA’s new Silicon Valley bureau.

QUICK TAKE VIDEO: A 13-floor apartment building has tilted in Egypt, causing damage to a building on the opposite side of the street. Egyptian police evacuated the neighborhood while sightseers keep showing up to take pictures of the leaning tower of Alexandria.
