‘They need to give him a chance!’ Salesman Dick Becker, a Trump supporter from the small town of Lancaster, Wisconsin, is optimistic about America’s future now that Donald Trump is president. His is one of many voices VOA heard from as we traveled a rural stretch of counties along the upper Mississippi River, meeting people in overwhelmingly white, Christian, working and middle class communities who are anxious for President Trump to put his stamp on Washington.

On This Day in American History
On May 26, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln establishes the Montana Territory, a vast area that became a US possession under the terms of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. There was little settlement in Montana until the 1850s, when the discovery of gold drew people hoping to strike it rich. It will be another 25 years before Montana enters the Union as the 41st US state.

VIDEO: On Monday, Americans will mark Memorial Day, a federal holiday honoring people who’ve died serving in the US armed services. In Washington, DC, there are more than a dozen memorials dedicated to those who died in service to their country. Here are some of the best-known military monuments.

The longest bridge in India has opened in the country’s remote northeast to boost its defenses close to its contested border with China. The 9.15-kilometer Dhola Sadiya bridge offers faster access to the Himalayan state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls South Tibet. The bridge was designed to withstand the weight of 60-ton battle tanks.
